New Ways to Cook and Showcase Food At The Food Network 2013 Upfronts

Food Network has an ambition slate of new and returning original content. The Food Network channel has become somewhat of a Cinderella story. It started off with critics thinking how could a channel devoted solely to cooking survive and thrive, and now it is one of the top rated cable channels, and has even garnered a spin off. There are more than a dozen new shows headed to the Food Network this season and they will feature everything from celebrities to fast-food and everything in between. There are so many new shows on the Food Network that I have trouble keeping count and I wrote the blog, if I missed a premiere date, or a new show just let me know in the comments section.

Giving You the Business (Premiered April 25th 2013)
CEOs of well-known food chains are looking to expand and reward one of their loyal, hard-working employees with the opportunity to own their own franchise. The twist? The employees don’t know. The bosses secretly enter them into a hidden-camera competition that will test them on their skills, their honesty and their ability to handle themselves in increasingly outrageous situations. In the end, one will be given the opportunity of a lifetime.

Food Court Wars - Premieres Sunday, July 7th at 10pm
Food Court Wars pits two teams of aspiring food entrepreneurs against one another as they battle to win their own food court restaurant rent-free for a year. Hosted by Tyler Florence, in every episode a mall in a different city wants to open a new ‘local’ eatery in the food court that offers a fresh region-specific menu. Stakes are high as teams must test their concept, market their brand, and run their outlet for a full day feeding hungry shoppers. The team whose restaurant makes the most profit wins their eatery space – a prize worth $100,000.

Bubba’s Grills Gone Wild (PREMIERES July 2013)
Bubba’s Grills Gone Wild profiles the lives of Bubba, his family and his crew, the creators of the world’s most outrageous custom barbecue grills. From car engines to big rigs, Bubba and his team can turn just about anything into a grill. Follow the day-to-day fun and drama as they battle impossible deadlines, and each other, to push the envelope of grill design and fabrication.

Chef Roulette (PREMIERES August 2013)
This cooking competition takes on a new spin, literally, when Chef Roulette brings four talented chefs together in a high stakes game of chance. Preparing a masterful meal, chefs must learn to expect the unexpected as their entire cooking station and dish may change hands as the wheel turns. The dish they started may not be the one they finish, as the wheel will decide which plate they are completing and ultimately being judged on.

Follow the lives and exploits of the Orrisons – the (unofficial) First Family of Mississippi. Brad Orrison and his family have amassed a fortune through a chain of Barbecue restaurants ultimately becoming the premier team in nationwide barbecue competitions. The Orrisons are a family full of big characters, big toys, and big laughs, and each episode will chronicle a different component of the Orrison’s ever growing family and business empire in the great state of Mississippi. Nothing is too wild for Brad, his family or the “Shed Heads” to conquer…in or out of the Shed

After opening his own consulting business and overseeing bar and club openings in seven countries, it’s safe to say that John Green knows bars. But if John is coming to your bar it means you are On the Rocks. Luckily for struggling bar owners, it’s John to the rescue. In each episode, John travels to bars around the country to help them keep their doors open and get business back to normal. He assesses the bar’s problems, confronts the owner and lets them know what needs to be fixed, whether it’s newly trained staff or a whole new design, John’s got the answers for what ails the bar.

Cutthroat Kitchen (PREMIERES SEPTEMBER 2013)
Just how far is a chef willing to go to win a cooking competition? Cutthroat Kitchen hands four chefs $25,000 and the opportunity to spend that money on helping themselves or sabotaging their competitors. Ingredients will be thieved, utensils destroyed and valuable time on the clock lost when these chefs compete to cook delicious dishes while also having to out plot the competition. With Alton Brown as the devilish provocateur, nothing is out of bounds when money changes hands and we see just how far one chef will go to insure they have the winning dish.

Four talented chefs compete in supermarket-themed cooking challenges as they must navigate their way through the aisles, adhering to “real-world” challenges of shopping on a budget, substituting out-of-stock ingredients, and cooking (and checking out) with five items or less. In the end, the food does the talking, as one-by-one the losing chefs are “bagged,” and the last chef standing goes on the shopping spree of a lifetime to make big bucks.
Poster is from last year. 2013 premiere date below

Bossover (PREMIERES October 2013)
The restaurant business is a cutthroat pressure cooker where every moment counts and failure is always right around the corner. With success rates at less than 50%, there’s a wide range of reasons that can cause closures, but sometimes it’s not the food, it’s not the location, and it’s not the employees – sometimes it’s the boss. That’s where Joe Bastianich comes in. Restaurants nominate their terrible bosses for a makeover from Joe, and the owner will have to perform his employees’ jobs to realize that success must start at the top.

Restaurant Divided (PREMIERES October 2013)
Restaurant Divided is a reality series that pits two warring factions in a failing, family-run restaurant – each with a different vision of how to save it – against each other to determine who has the best plan. After dividing the entire restaurant space in half, each group is given a limited time and budget to transform their space into their vision for a new restaurant. Then, the two restaurants open and compete, side-by-side, by serving real customers over a period of two nights. The concept that does best overall in customer reviews, critic reviews and profitability will be the one that unites the restaurant again.

Restaurant Express (PREMIERES November 2013)
Robert Irvine has gathered eight aspiring restaurateurs for a bus road trip of a lifetime. Through a rigorous set of challenges, Robert will be looking at every aspect of their business acumen and testing all the skills needed to run their own restaurant. In the end, only one person will remain on the bus, ultimately dropped-off at their final stop: their very own restaurant.

Beat Bobby Flay (PREMIERES 2013)
In order to beat Bobby Flay, you have to get to him first. This new series is the ultimate throwdown-showdown…. Three culinary masters, each with their own signature dish, a dish that they’d stake their reputations on, travel to New York for the chance to challenge Bobby Flay to a head-to-head cook-off of their specialty. But first, these contenders must battle it out to see who has the culinary prowess to ultimately go one-on-one against Bobby on his own turf.

Chef Marks the Spot (PREMIERES 2013)
In this cutting edge, culinary competition, two blindfolded chefs are dropped into a real-world environment far from a standard kitchen and pantry – a carnival, dormitory, boardwalk, shopping mall, airplane, hospital, the Las Vegas Strip, Times Square, etc. After removing their blindfolds, the chefs only have a 50-foot radius to source their ingredients and prepare a masterful meal. Regulated by ankle monitors and armed with only a mobile cooking station, the chefs must use their resourcefulness, creativity, and culinary prowess to impress the palates of a group of judges. In the end, only one chef will be victorious in this one-of-a-kind challenge.

Amateur Chefs Competition Show / American Superstar Chef (PREMIERES 2014)
The biggest home cook tournament spanning the entire country. Join eight celebrity chefs, each representing their own region of the country, as they pick one home cook to represent them and their region in the tournament of their lives. Through a series of head-to-head competitions coached by their celebrity chef, ultimately, one home cook will be crowned the American Superstar Chef.

Undercover Critics (PREMIERES 2014)
Restaurant critics are armed with hidden cameras, looking to unveil the good, the bad and the ugly of established restaurants. Undercover Critics will give restaurant owners a second chance to improve on their faults and flaws, before any review is actually published. After visiting the restaurant, our Undercover Critics will reveal themselves, letting the owner know about the visit and handing over the ‘would-be/could-be’ negative review. With a laundry list of things to fix, we’ll see owners do whatever it takes to turn a bad review into a great one before it hits the press.

Amazon Studios Brings Original Series to Amazon, at their 2013 Upfronts

Amazon Studios has done its final selection process in an innovating way, letting the viewer’s decide which shows would make it to series. Out of amazon’s inaugural fourteen pilots, 5 series will air exclusively on amazon prime instant videos. I personally watched and voted for a few of the pilots myself, and I must say that I enjoyed the interactive process that Amazon Studios provided. So far there are only children’s shows and comedies, but they say they will eventually expanded into dramas, and I am anxiously awaiting for their next development slate.

Alpha House,
is a comedy about four misfit senators-turned-unlikely roommates (Goodman, Clark Johnson, Matt Malloy and Mark Consuelos) who rent a house together in Washington DC. “We’re thrilled to have emerged safely from this harrowing exercise in online democracy,” said Trudeau. “All of us at Alpha House thank both Amazon and its wise and wonderful customer base for such a happy outcome. As the future of episodic TV packs up and moves to Seattle, we hope the audience will continue to have as much fun watching the show as we have making it.”

follows four friends as they attempt to strike it rich with a new mobile social networking app. Ed Begley Jr, Jon Daly, Joe Dinicol, Charlie Saxton and Karan Soni star. Michael Lehmann will direct and produce along with Emmy winners Alan Freedland and Alan Cohen, and Osacr nominee Michael London. “After many sleepless nights scrutinizing the number of stars we were getting online, we’re excited that both Amazon and the Amazon customers have given us a vote of confidence to move forward with a full season of Betas,” said London. “This is only the beginning for our young social media players and we are excited to push them out in the big world to see if they sink or swim.”

Creative Galaxy
is an animated interactive art adventure series designed to inspire kids creative thinking through crafts, story, music and dance. The series was created by Angela Santomero, creator of Blue’s Clues and the Emmy-nominated literacy series Super Why!. “It’s really rewarding to hear that customers loved Creative Galaxy. It has been a passion project for me to bring the best arts and creativity to kids with Amazon, and I’m so excited that kids are going to be able to enjoy a full season of the show early next year,” said Santomero. “We need more innovative kids programming that puts a strong emphasis on creativity and education. I’m proud and honored to be collaborating with Amazon to make these shows for kids.”

Anne, a young scientist, who creates three robot helpers to assist her scientific experiments in the back of her dad’s junkyard. This science-based series from creator J.J. Johnson aims to introduce kids to science and technology in a fun, new way.

The series, aimed at preschoolers, is set in a whimsical land where a small blue fox named Fig plays each day and discovers adventure, friendship and love around every bend. Children will be enriched by narratives that promote play through exploration and scientific thinking.

I have to admit that I am not a fan of most comedies. I am a drama girl at heart and if I am watching a comedy its most likely a sitcom. I love hot in Cleveland, Melissa and Joey, and Last Man Standing. Therefore, I have to be honest none of these shows really appeal to me. I did watch and rate Alpha House and thought it was a decent laugh. If you are a republican then alpha house is not for you, its a parody of all the stereotypes anyone has ever heard of senators from this party. Hopefully next pilot season, Amazon will include some dramas. So what about you? what will you be watching? did you rate any of the pilots that were shown on Amazon? Let us know in the comments section.

National Geographic Channel Goes off the Map at 2013 Upfronts

The National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo Wild are quickly building themselves into a network that encompasses everything that has to do with the people who live in the United States, and the environment in which they live. From polygamy to wild predators, the national geographic is not afraid to shine a light in places most people have never heard of, or to explore places people have never been. At its upfront presentation in May, the national geographic channel introduced four new and seven returning series. If you have not checked out any of the shows/miniseries currently airing on Nat Geo I strongly urge you to give it a try.

They are some the toughest, most extreme survivalists that Alaska has to offer. Going head to head, eight men of a rare breed are about to take the ultimate test of survival in Arctic conditions that only National Geographic could inspire. Dropped in the middle of the Alaskan wilderness by bush plane, with only their raw, mountain-man ingenuity, they’ll navigate through treacherous glaciated river valleys, barren ridgelines, and high mountain peaks, battling hunger, hostile predators, and perilous weather conditions along the way. Like the original National Geographic explorers, for those who succeed there is no grand prize, just the well-fought pride of having conquered the grueling challenges that Mother Nature can throw at them. It's an epic competition series where the only prize is survival.

Life Below Zero follows six people as they battle for the most basic necessities in the state with the lowest population density in the United States. Living at the ends of the world's loneliest roads and subsisting off the rugged Alaskan bush, they battle whiteout snow storms, man-eating carnivores, questionable frozen terrain, and limited resources through a long and bitter winter. Some of them are lone wolves; others have their families beside them. All must overcome despairing odds to brave the wild and survive through to the spring.

We've taken you around the world exploring behaviors and lifestyles that are acceptable in some cultures but forbidden, illegal or reviled in others. But this season, we're looking in our own backyard. Taboo USA goes behind the closed doors and picket fences of America’s most normal looking homes to find a fringe few that can only be described as... taboo. And we're showcasing those willing to push the boundaries of taste, societal acceptance; those obsessive about their hobbies, their relationships, and their lifestyles.

Hobbyist metal detectorists “King George” Wyant and his buddy Tim “The Ringmaster” Saylor travel the country looking for lost relics of history. Their enthusiasm is contagious, their humor quirky, and their vocabulary... one of a kind. “KG” and “Ringy” are kids at heart, driven not by money, but the thrill of not knowing what their next dig will unearth. They understand that every item has a story to tell, and Diggers brings history to life through graphics and historical context. They are invited by landowners, historians and archaeologists to go on a quest, and in their own way, a crusade, to unearth history that would have otherwise been forgotten.

Returning for a new season, the Fish Tank Kings are back to rule the rough waters. Extreme aquarium building is definitely not a tankless job (zing!). Dive in to witness a new season of complex challenges from demanding clients as these underwater wizards aim to deliver perfection in their uniquely pressure-filled world.

This four-part, incredible event will travel the globe with the best cameramen and women to find new and totally surprising stories of the animal kingdom’s hunters that few people know about. We’ll see 45 different animal species in 12 habitats and in 18 countries around the globe.

There is some interesting content on NGC for sure. I absolutely loved their show Polygamy USA, it went deep into a culture and community I was hoping some show would eventually explore. I think my next adventure into NGC will be inside the american mob, it looks intriguing and I love learning about worlds, people and cultures I have never seen up close. What about you... what do you love about NGC? Is there a new show you are looking forward to watching? An old series you just can't wait to see renewed?  What will you be watching? Peter Gunn
This re-imagining of the classic post-modern Blake Edwards-Craig Stevens’ series centers on a gentleman private eye who is not above getting his bespoke suit and tie dirty, if that’s what it takes to bring down the bad guys, save his hometown and win back the love of the gal he left behind.

The Last Cop
Life can seem to pass in the blink of an eye, but for LAPD cop Mick Branigan it actually did in this project based on the hit German series. After almost 20 years in a coma, Mick awakens to a changed world – his loving wife has moved on, his teenage daughter doesn’t know him, and his old police force bears no resemblance to the one he knew in the ’90s.

A Bend in the Road
This character drama based on Nicholas Sparks’ book is set in a resort town. Sheriff Miles Ryan is known for his keen ability to solve crimes and his deep understanding of the town’s citizens. Guilt by Association
Based on the debut novel by Marcia Clark, lead prosecutor in the O.J. Simpson trial, this project centers on Rachel Knight, a gutsy Deputy District Attorney in the Special Trials Unit of the D.A.’s office for L.A. County. She works closely with a tough-as-nails female LAPD detective named Bailey Keller and a stylish female prosecutor named Toni LaCollette, both of whom routinely crash at Rachel’s place.

Lew Archer
Based on the title character from Ross McDonald’s popular novels, this project from The Closer creator James Duff and Close to Home creator Jim Leonard follows the sleuth many consider to be “the original P.I.”

This primetime soap focuses on two rich lovers: Caz, whose father, Jeremy owns Terra Winery, and Daphne, Jeremy’s young wife. When Jeremy announces that he has amended his will to leave them each 50% of the business, their rivalry gets the better of them. They make a unique bet to determine who has the best seductive powers.

From executive producer Denis Leary, Burn is an action-packed docudrama told through the eyes of Detroit firefighters, who are charged with the task of saving a city that many have written off as dead. Burn will take viewers closer than ever to the fires and the lives of the men and women who fight them, exploring human struggles, hope and personal courage in the face of overwhelming odds.

Cop Swap
From legendary producer Dick Wolf comes a unique unscripted format. Each week, two law enforcement officials from diverse backgrounds and departments immerse themselves in each other’s lives and jobs in an effort to learn something that will make them better officers, partners and citizens of the law. When all is said and done, the cops reflect on their mutual journeys, and reveal new perspectives on what it means to protect and serve.

From the iconic toy and game company Hasbro comes the reality version of the popular game. Eight two-person teams will play a game of real-world Monopoly with a huge cash prize at stake. Just like the iconic game, the ultimate goal is to amass as much property and wealth as possible in this game that requires strategy, business acumen, people skills and chance.

The Big Deal
From the producers of The Biggest Loser and MasterChef comes the biggest treasure hunt America has ever seen. Teams of antique and collectible enthusiasts from across the country compete in an epic scavenger hunt for the chance to win thousands in cash.

In small towns across America, cases involving violent crimes can often go cold because of a lack of funding, resources and state-of-the-art forensic technology. In TNT’s Save Our Business, Jones travels across America on a mission – investing his time and expertise and putting his reputation and even his own money on the line to save small businesses in trouble. Each week, Jones will assess the major problems facing a struggling company and design a plan to help save it from collapsing.

NASHVILLE CONFIDENTIAL (Premieres Winter 2014)
Nashville Confidential is set in and around the high-stakes country music business based in Nashville, Tenn. Centering on some of Nashville’s most compelling power couples, the show provides an alluring and unprecedented glimpse behind the scenes of one of America’s most unique, vibrant and competitive cities.

THE LAST SHIP (Premieres 2014)
TNT has ordered 10 episodes of The Last Ship, with plans to launch the series in 2014. The story opens with a global catastrophe that nearly decimates the world’s population. Because of its positioning, the Navy destroyer U.S.S. Nathan James avoids falling victim to the devastating tragedy. But now the crew and its captain must confront the reality of their new existence in a world where they may be among the few remaining survivors.

LEGENDS (Premieres 2014)
Legends is based on the award-winning book by master spy novelist Robert Littell, whose CIA novel The Company served as the basis for TNT’s acclaimed 2007 miniseries. In Legends, Bean stars as Martin Odum, an undercover agent working for the FBI’s Deep Cover Operations (D.C.O.) division. Martin has the uncanny ability to transform himself into a completely different person for each job. But he begins to question his own identity when a mysterious stranger suggests that Martin isn’t the man he believes himself to be.

Monday Mornings

I have been waiting for USA, TNT or ABCF to turn away from their primarily summer, winter original programming model, and instead emphasize all year original programming. In recent years cable has been outshining network television in quality and rating. I am excited to see how TNT is going to pull this off. I love the trailers for legends and the last ship, they look amazing and I will be on the edge of my seat the entire time. This summer TNT is doing a great mix of returning favorites and new shows. Has anyone checked out the rocks new show Hero? Is King and Maxwell and good? Did the premiere of Rizzoli and Isles live up to expectations? What new show on TNT are you looking forward to? Let us know in the comments section.
