Fans of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, New Girl, The Mindy Project and The Following can all breathe a little easier, because Fox is giving early renewal to these four shows. Brooklyn Nine Nine which recently was awarded a Golden Globes will begin its sophomore season fall 2014. The Mindy Project and The Following will also be heading into its third season this fall, which almost always means that they will both be enjoying a fourth season so that they can get to that magical syndication number.
New Girl will be heading into its fourth season, which was no surprise considering it’s the networks strongest comedy. These shows will join 3 other Fox scripted series that have already been renewed for next season including; freshman drama Sleepy Hollow; veteran Bones, renewed for a 10th season; and Glee, which has a final sixth season as part of a two-year pickup.
What is odd is that Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Mindy Project were both picked up early, since while they have both been well received they both have been well received but have struggled to attract larger audiences. New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine didn't get a boost from their airing after the Super Bowl, most recently posting a 1.4 and a 1.3 in 18-49 this week. Meanwhile The Following, after a very strong first season, returned down, with its second cycle posting a string of series lows, not helped by having to face the Winter Olympics. However, all four series that received pickups today are big DVR gainers, significantly increasing their soft Live+Same Day ratings. I’m sure that the network may decide to change the timeslot of a lot of these shows so that viewers are more likely to watch the series live.
